Shaped Handmade Paper--A Mythical Forest
The Mythical Forst is populated with butterfly wings, animals, trees and shaman's capes. These images are contemporary interpretations of illuminated manuscripts--painted prayers reflecting my connection to the mystery of nature.
Created literally "from the inside out," these handmade paper pieces are made in the shapes you see here--not cut out of torn to look like this. When each shaped sheet has fully dried, I add color, texture, and design information to the surfaces with collagraph, monotype and pochoir (stencil). The papers pass through the etching press as many as 12 times. Gilded "incidentals" are features of many pieces, as well as gilding emphasizing the mysterious ragged edges. Although made on the etching press, each piece is unique.
